Firm News

Lawyers and staff alike at Hurley Stanners work hard at serving our clients. We do like to play now and then and have a tendency to visit a haunted house, celebrate the holidays together over good food and wine and even have been known to visit a baseball game from time to time. We become like a family together and therefore we share the news of those that make the firm work.

Publications
Hurley Stanners law firm was asked in 2009 to author a chapter on Illinois law for an international publication titled, Doing Business in North America. The book was published in October of 2011 by Juris Publications and we are proud of it and the contributions of the contributing authors.

Honors
Joanne F. Hurley has been named an Illinois Super Lawyer and a Top Woman Attorney in Illinois by Thompson Reuters, a national publisher, recognizing her as one of the top attorneys in Illinois for 2013.  No more than 5 % of the lawyers in the State are selected as a Super Lawyer in any year. Joanne was included in the 2013 Super Lawyer Business Edition (Illinois) in February, 2013 and a detailed on-line version of the listing is available at www.superlawyer.com. She will also be featured in the October, 2013 issue of Chicago Magazine. Super Lawyers, a Thompson Reuters initiative, is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The annual selections are made using a rigorous multi-phased process that includes a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent research evaluation of candidates, and peer reviews by practice areas.

New Staff
Diane Spehar joined the firm in August, 2012 and keeps everyone in check as our Office Manager and Bookkeeper.  Diane’s family keeps her busy outside the office, with High School aged twins, Triston and Kiandra and Ross Powell, her husband, is a world renowned geologist who has been studying climate issues in Anartica before anyone else suspected that global warming was a reality.  Triston and Kiandra are active in sports and Triston was recently involved in a robotics competition where his team finished as finalists in FIRST’s Midwest Regional Competition.

Mentored Internship Program
David M. Barkan, a third year student at Chicago’s Kent College of Law has participated in our Hurley Stanners Mentored Internship Program for Winter/Spring 2013.  David has worked five days a week on projects ranging from business purchases, refinance of debt as part of a Loan Modification and a Federal Investigation based on wage and hour issues. In his quiet way, David has learned about “lawyering” during his “Mentored Internship Program Lunches” and daily lessons and has learned about drafting contracts and in depth investigation of client matters and in return has contributed by his computer and technical skills. We are pleased to announce that David will join the firm this year upon completion of his bar exams.

Speaking Engagements
Joanne F. Hurley participated in a 2012 webinar with Paul Klein on legal issues for visual artists, Paul is an art consultant and educator and works with visual artists on business and artistic issues as a part of a 12 week webinar program, Klein Artist Works. Recently Joanne spoke to a group of students at Chicago’s North Grand High School=s Afterschool Program, “Leading for Change”. As only Joanne can do, she had met six members of this group at a local cleaners seeking donations for a Washington Leadership Conference and the next thing we knew she was volunteering to talk to the whole group. A Partnership with this School Program may be in the works.
